Construction: Lead Acid Batteries
Lead Acid batteries are generally referred to as Absorbed Glass Mat (AGM), Gelled Electrolyte (Gel) and Flooded Electrolyte:
- In Flooded Electrolyte types, a solution of sulfuric acid and water is used and is free flowing within the battery. The electrolyte will spill out of a flooded battery if it is tipped.
- AGM or Gelled Electrolyte types use a solution of sulfuric acid and water that is suspended and absorbed into a glass matt material or gelled by the introduction of special additives. The electrolyte will not spill out of an AGM or Gelled electrolyte battery if it is tipped.
