Safety and working with Batteries

CAUTION / DANGER

  • Always wear proper eye, face and hand protection.
  • Keep sparks flames and cigarettes away from the battery.
  • Do not remove or damage vent caps.
  • Do not open in any way Sealed Valve Regulated batteries.
  • Cover vents with a damp cloth to minimize gas seepage (flooded types).
  • Make sure work area is well ventilated.
  • Never lean over battery while testing, boosting or charging.

Lead-acid batteries contain sulfuric acid which is a highly corrosive poison and will produce gasses when recharged and explode if ignited. This can hurt you! When working with batteries, you need to have plenty of ventilation, remove your jewelry, wear protective eyewear (safety glasses) and clothing, and exercise caution. Do not allow battery electrolyte to mix with salt water. Even small quantities of this combination will produce Chlorine gas that can kill you! Whenever possible follow the manufacturer’s instructions.

CAUTION/DANGER:

Do not allow battery electrolyte to mix with salt water. Even small quantities of this combination will produce Chlorine gas that can KILL you!

SAFETY FIRST

Although Poison Danger, Safety and Caution information is dispersed throughout the information presented in the discover-energy web site, on Discover battery labels and in Discover brochures, we list the basics below:

  • Danger of Exploding Batteries.
  • Batteries contain sulfuric.
  • Batteries produce explosive mixtures of hydrogen and oxygen when discharging and charging.
  • Because self-discharge action generates hydrogen gas even when the battery is not in operation make sure batteries are stored and worked on in well ventilated areas.
  • ALWAYS wear safety glasses and a face shield when working on or near batteries.
